Fantasy football has grown by leaps and bounds. I remember playing back when there was no internet, we called in our lineups and scored from Monday morning’s newspaper stat lines. How times have changed!
Now you can join leagues online on a wide variety of sites and play for free, prizes or cash. For NFL fans, fantasy football is a great way to get more involved in the game and enjoy your Sundays more – as well as strut your knowledge of NFL players!
Fantasy football is very basic when you get right down to it. You draft a team of players, choose your starters each week based on your leagues starting lineup requirements and get points based on your player’s performances. For example, in standard scoring you would get a point for every 10 yards a player rushes. So if you have a running back that rushes for 125 yards in a game, you will get 12.5 points under this scoring system.
In addition, touchdowns are typically worth 6 points (many leagues give passing touchdowns 4 points for better balance, while some also award QB’s 6 points). So if your running back from above also ran in two touchdowns, you would get an additional 12 points, so you would end up with 24.5 points for that player.
Each league is a little different, and before you draft you should look at the scoring system. If your league gives 6 points for passing touchdowns, for example, you will know that quarterbacks are more highly valued than in a league giving only 4 points. In that case you may want to draft a quarterback earlier than you would in another league.
Typically speaking running backs are one of the most valuable players, and many people have a draft strategy to stockpile a number of quality running backs early. In point per reception leagues (where you get a point per reception), wide receivers are more valuable than in standard leagues that do not award this point per reception. In those leagues you may consider drafting a wide reciever or two much earlier than in other standard leagues.
The best way to learn to play fantasy football is to go join a league and start playing! Check out our fantasy football leauges page where we look at three different places you can play. You can likely find a league to fit what you are looking for between these three places – whether it is a free league to learn, a weekly league for in season fantasy or a money league to earn cash!
